Leadership
- Mustafa Suleyman · CEO, Microsoft AI
- Satya Nadella · CEO, Microsoft
Microsoft AI is the division Microsoft created in March 2024 when it hired Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind and of Inflection AI, as its CEO. It runs Microsoft’s consumer Copilot assistant and builds Microsoft’s own frontier models.
From partner to builder
For years Microsoft’s SI strategy rested on its multibillion-dollar partnership with OpenAI. A revised agreement on October 28, 2025 reshaped that relationship. Microsoft took roughly a 27% stake in OpenAI’s new public benefit corporation and gained freedom to pursue advanced SI on its own.
“Humanist superintelligence”
On November 6, 2025, Suleyman announced the MAI Superintelligence Team, focused on what he calls humanist superintelligence: highly capable systems aimed at concrete problems, kept under human control. Priority areas include personal companions, medical superintelligence for faster and more accurate diagnosis, and scientific breakthroughs such as clean energy.
Models
Microsoft AI releases in-house MAI models. In June 2026 it announced seven new models spanning reasoning, coding, transcription, voice, image generation and image editing. Copilot uses a mix of MAI and partner models.
Policy
Microsoft was not among the signatories of the White House Accord on Super Intelligence. Its use of “superintelligence” refers to the research meaning, beyond-human systems, not the government’s new name for AI. See SI vs superintelligence.
Frequently asked questions
Does Microsoft still work with OpenAI?
Yes. Microsoft holds about 27% of OpenAI Group PBC as of OpenAI's 2025 restructuring (later funding will have changed this). The revised 2025 agreement also freed Microsoft to pursue advanced SI independently, which led to its own superintelligence team.
Did Microsoft sign the White House Accord on Super Intelligence?
Microsoft was not among the six companies whose leaders signed the Accord on September 29, 2026.
