The word “artificial” is officially on its way out of the U.S. federal government’s vocabulary. Executive Order 14434, “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence”, signed by President Trump on September 29, 2026, directs every executive department and agency to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI”. It was published in the Federal Register on October 2 (FR Doc. 2026-20321).

From UN speech to signed order in a week

The President previewed the change at the UN General Assembly on September 22, saying the word “artificial” made the technology “sound fake”. According to The Next Web, he then polled his Truth Social followers on “super intelligence” versus “superior intelligence”. The former won.

What the order requires

  • Agencies must use the new terms in “official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports, policy documents, and other non-statutory documents.”
  • Old regulations, contracts, grants and historical documents don’t need to be changed.
  • For now, “SI” legally means exactly what “AI” meant under 15 U.S.C. § 9401(3).
  • Within 60 days, the President’s science adviser must propose legislative language for a new federal definition of SI. See what to watch.

What it doesn’t do

The order doesn’t regulate SI, rename any law, or apply to businesses, states or the public. Companies are free to keep saying AI, though federal contractors may want to match agency language. Our AI → SI Converter can help with that.
