The Genesis Mission is the U.S. government’s flagship effort to use SI for scientific discovery. President Trump launched it with Executive Order 14363 on November 24, 2025.
What it does
- Directs the Department of Energy (DOE) and its 17 national laboratories to build a unified platform that brings together federal scientific datasets, supercomputers and SI models.
- Aims to speed up breakthroughs in areas the administration highlights, including medicine, energy, materials and manufacturing.
- Brings in partners from industry and universities.
Funding
- In March 2026, DOE announced funding opportunities under the mission.
- On July 22, 2026, the White House announced more than $5 billion in federal commitments across more than 15 agencies.
- The White House’s September 2026 fact sheet on the AI-to-SI rename lists it among related initiatives, as a $5 billion Genesis Mission for SI-driven scientific breakthroughs.
Why it matters
Genesis is the main investment side of current U.S. SI policy, alongside the deregulatory measures in America’s AI Action Plan and EO 14365. Critics question whether funding will match the ambition. Supporters see it as a way to put national-lab compute and data to work.
